(social media dementia - now there's a post for my technology blog Self Publishing Today... do you start to sense a theme?)

Anyway - here's the post I meant to post here... so don't go read it there... you can see 'em over on the Dog Ear Publishing site - and would welcome any thoughts you might have; send your comments to me via email (I'm rayr -you know what goes in here- dogearpublishing dot net ... isn't spam a pain...) or leave them below.

Google Book Search - especially when the SELF publishing industry, for the most part, has always been green.

In the vast majority of our self publishing efforts, print-on-demand is utilized to produce the books. Print-on-demand is by its very nature more green than printing thousands of books that then sit in warehouses, often simply to be sent back to the shredder. It's even more green when the books are truly print-on-demand and the technology is used to fulfill end consumer orders. The print-on-demand model (when used to satisfy end-consumer need) is just about the most environment-friendly book publishing option in the book industry (really only e-books are more environmentally gentle). Imagine how many trees would be saved by only printing the books that are ordered, using strict environmental practices and certified materials.

My company, Dog Ear Publishing, works very hard to be the best and smartest choice for authors, and we quickly realized that building beautiful books doesn’t have to be harmful to the environment. We use recycled papers – though it may vary in percentage as our printing process does limit us in some ways due to the speed at which we print our books.

The offset printing-hold inventory model of publishing requires large amounts of printed inventory – all of which are produced BEFORE a sale is ever made to keep costs low and profits high. Practically every single title produced by the traditional publishing market in a traditional offset-printed matter have a large quantity of books that go unsold and are consequently returned and destroyed. To make matters worse, this is typically in addition to being shipped and handled multiple times.

At Dog Ear Publishing, a book is typically printed only after the sale is made – ensuring that each book we print has a home with a reader. Print on demand helps eliminate waste, reduces carbon emissions and helps us be a good steward of our valuable natural resources.

The raw materials used in all Dog Ear Publishing books carry certifications that promote the health of our planet and industry - our raw materials are obtained from Chain of Custody (COC) certified suppliers, which guarantees the environmental sustainability and sourcing of materials used. We use environmentally certified papers that carry one or more certifications from:

FSC – The Forest Stewardship Council
SFI – The Sustainable Forestry Initiative
PEFC – The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification GREEN-E

Some of papers we use are even are produced using 100% wind power. Dog Ear Publishing papers contain NO old growth forest content, content from forests of exceptional conservation value, or the Amazon Basin; and all papers ARE sourced from Sustainable Reforestation Programs.

My partners, Alan Harris and Miles Nelson, and I believe that building beautiful books doesn’t have to be harmful to the environment. In addition to recycled papers, Dog Ear Publishing has retrofitted its entire office with energy efficient light bulbs, and our equipment is energy star rated. With quite a bit of success, we've implemented an office wide recycling program. Very little of anything is simply thrown away - we are reducing and recycling everything from paper, aluminum to our equipment.

We created “Dog Ear CARES,” a program through which we dedicate a portion of sales to supporting environmental efforts to reduce pollution (including carbon emissions), protect natural habitats and foster alternative and renewable fuels - in addition to organizations like RIF and others that promote literacy.

Changing up A Day in the Life of a Dog

I'm shifting things around here in this blog - moving the Dog Ear Publishing author PR stuff over to a new blog I've built - located here at Blogger - www.selfpublishingstories.com.

This blog will grow to be mostly about Dog Ear Publishing and my thoughts in the industry in general - as applied to Dog Ear directly (I also have an industry blog called SelfPublishingToday.com)

Stay tuned !

Parents Can Teach Their Children How to Save and How to Spend Money in this Brilliant New Release!

The Adventures of ExoKid and the Teachings of Money is released by author Richard Outram CPA and illustrated by Elizabeth Kapatos

Today millions of Americans find themselves in serious debt. Many people are unable to live within their means while others have made serious financial mistakes. How can we teach our children to avoid the usual pitfalls of bad money management? More importantly, how can we instill in them good common financial sense?

The Adventures of ExoKid and the Teachings of Money is an exciting new children’s book about money that parents and children can read together. One day ExoKid, a boy from outer space, spies a green piece of paper floating through space. He decides to take the paper back to its source, planet Earth. There he meets Pennie who gives him a tour of a bank and explains how savings accounts work. Later Pennie takes him back to her family where he learns all about how to save money, write up a budget and spend responsibly among other things.

The Adventures of ExoKid and the Teachings of Money begins with elementary explanations of coin and dollar amounts, but as the book progresses, children are introduced to more sophisticated topics such as investments, interest and debt. Each short chapter in the book ends with a list of questions to review the topics and to encourage a dialogue between parents and kids. For example, kids are asked, “What is a budget?” or “Describe the difference between a need and a want.”

The Adventures of ExoKid and the Teachings of Money is a great tool for parents to teach their kids about finances in a way that not only makes sense but is exciting for them. The dynamic and colorful illustrations by Elizabeth Kapatos will keep children entertained as they learn about the workings of money. Parents will feel relieved that their children are learning about finances and children will enjoy riding along with ExoKid!

If you would like more information about publishing your own book, visit the Dog Ear Publishing website.
----------

The Adventures of ExoKid and the Teachings of Money
Ricahrd Outram CPA
Dog Ear Publishing
ISBN: 978-159858-898-9 36 pages US

Available at Ingram, Baker&Taylor, Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble, Borders and fine bookstores everywhere

Praise for the United States of America in this Exciting New Release

What America Means to Me is released by self-published author Albert F. Waggoner

When seven year old Mara meets nine year old Orson on the beach on Whidbey Island one day, they are instantly attracted to one another. They dive for seaweed and kiss under the water and when the day is done, Mara is inconsolable. “I’ll find you again” promises Orson. Fast forward forty-five years to the future and Mara is a widow and a single mother raising a 16 year old daughter. She’s also a state trooper full of spunk and devoted to fighting crime. When she pulls over Orson, a successful software magnate, for speeding one day, the two fall in love a second time.

Freckles: Angel on her Shoulder is an off-beat romance by author Eric G. Waggoner that will keep readers entertained from page one. At one point, Mara and Orson find themselves working together to stop a dangerous terrorist cell from carrying out an attack and they both end up in the hospital with extensive injuries. There they meet a rather special nurse named Ruth, who will clue them into their supernatural abilities and the real reason behind their serendipitous encounters. It seems that their attraction for one another is no accident!

Perhaps the best part of this novel is the playful banter between Mara and Orson. By the time you finish Freckles, you will feel like you know these two oddballs better than your best friend. Shucman was convinced that the voice she heard was that of Jesus Christ. Her book became a widely popular among people who wanted to become closer to God yet did not feel comfortable with traditional Christianity. A Few Thoughts about the Course, by author Robert Brink, is an exciting study guide to compliment A Course in Miracles.

A Few Thoughts about the Course covers many interesting topics including forgiveness, miracles, separation versus oneness and time versus eternity. There is much to wrap ones mind around in this eye-opening book. According to Brink, the reality that we perceive around us is an illusion which leads us to experience our existence as separate from God and each other. By reading his book and studying the ideas and revelations inspired by A Course in Miracles, readers will learn how to undo this illusion and achieve oneness with God. A Few Thoughts about the Course is for anyone who is yearning for a closer relationship with God and a deeper understanding of spiritual matters.

If you are interested in self-publishing your own book, visit us at Dog Ear Publishing.

----------

A Few Thoughts About the Course
Robert Brink
Dog Ear Publishing
ISBN: 978-159858-885-9 232 pages US

Available at Ingram, Baker&Taylor, Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble, Borders and fine bookstores everywhere

Grandma Tells Her Grandchildren the Tale of a Sly Fox to Teach Them About Internet Safety in this New Children's Release

The Fox Behind the Chatterbox is released by self-published author Anne Matalonis with illustrations by Chelsea McGhee

The internet is an amazing tool that children have at their fingertips. Children can play games and learn lots of new and exciting things using learning websites. Unfortunately, the internet is also full of predators. How can parents be sure that their children will navigate safely? Just as children are taught not to accept candy from strangers in the street, now they need to learn about avoiding virtual dangers on line!

In this brilliant new release from author Anne Matalonis, a girl named Samantha and her little brother Zach are excited about getting a new computer at home. Samantha is angry when her parents forbid entering chat rooms. When Grandma comes to visit she sits Samantha and Zach down and tells them the story of a young, innocent chicken named Chickabella and a sly, dangerous fox named Tricky Vick.

Chickabella was new to the chicken coop and felt lonely. One day a new friend began speaking to her from a hole in the coop. He claimed to be a little chicken like Chickabella and the two began a friendship which Chickabella kept a secret from the other hens. Actually it was Tricky Vick the fox pretending to be a chicken! His plan was to lure Chickabella to his den! Finally when Chickabella is ready to go and meet her new friend in person, she tells another hen. They send the dog to meet this friend and Tricky Vick gets the surprise of his life! Instead of taking home a young innocent chicken, he loses a mouthful of red fur! Chickabella is saved and learns about the dangers of unseen friends and secret relationships.

Children and parents alike will enjoy reading this story together. The illustrations by Chelsea McGhee are warm and expressive. The colorful red fox brings to life hidden dangers that would otherwise be too abstract for children to understand. Parents today will not want to pass up this opportunity to protect their children from harm!

About the Author
Today’s children have the world at their fingertips. As early as three years of age, children use the Internet. As parents, care-givers and educators, we must protect them as they explore online. This book was created from my strong desire to keep our children safe as they grow and learn. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. I reside in Sycamore, Illinois with my husband and two children.

About the Illustrator
This is my first book. When his parents lose hold of Flathead during an underwater storm, he is adopted by an angelfish. She takes Flathead to her home in the coral reef to live. Sadly, the other fish children won’t play with Flathead because he looks different from them. The angelfish decides to take Flathead to see the wise Black Pearl, who knows the answers to all things. When they are admitted to the palace, the Black Pearl shows Flathead that he has a special gift: his sword-like tail. Flathead returns to the coral reef and proudly shows the other fish his amazing tail. Finally Flathead believes in himself and embraces his differences with pride.

The brightly colored illustrations by Nathan Smith bring the story of Little Flathead and the Black Pearl to life. Alice and her father are preparing to face an extraordinary dragon! They are waiting in a long line filled with other people and inching ever closer to their loud and fearsome destination. Alice tries to distract herself from the cries of the people who have already ridden on the monster’s back but she is still very afraid. Finally she and her father climb onto the monster and…they have an excellent and thrilling ride! The story is brought to life by the whimsical and colorful illustrations by Jill Greenfelder. Each of these 21 poems reveals something new and exciting about her. As one critic writes, “Mr. Hawley focuses his penetrating eye on both the ordinary and the unusual. Like a necklace, the poems string together a series of unique gems to form a consequential whole.”

The poems in Twenty-One Visits to a Darkly Sun-Tanned Angel seek to capture the essence of this ethereal being that Hawley has conjured up at the seaside. In the beginning he describes her appearance and perfect clothing. As we get to know her better, we learn that angels cry easily, suddenly, and often. When he explores the nature of her profound sadness, the images brought forth are both graphic and terrifying.

Fans of original poetry will enjoy Richard Hawley’s work. The language and imagery in Twenty-One Visits to a Darkly Sun-Tanned Angel will stay with you long after you put the book down.

Hawley self-published his poetry with the help of Dog Ear Publishing. Novarro helped crack a sensitive government investigation and as a result found himself cut off from his past life forever. Novarro created a new and bolder alter ego and became the world-famous Johnny Denovo, Detective of the Mind, and the bane of high stakes criminals the world over.

In Spam and Eggs, a Johnny Denovo mystery, Johnny receives several bizarre spam e-mails and begins detecting hidden codes in them that suggest a plot to steal rare and valuable objects. But it seems this is no ordinary case of rich people worried about losing their expensive possessions, rather something far more sinister. The book follows Blake Mantle, a young Hawaiian man, who gets forced by his very first client to make a dangerous airplane delivery to the neighboring island Maui during a dangerous tropical storm. There he discovers two cities that have been hidden from the surface world for decades that are currently at war with each other.

In this underground world of Paradise, the weapons of choice are 13 unique jet packs that allow its user the ability to form Battle Armor over his entire body directly from the pack itself; whether Spartan, Roman, Ninja or Samurai. Here is where Blake accidentally discovers a uniquely powerful armor that allows his very body to form into a weapon that has such power it has been sought after by both sides for several years. As Blake is befriended by the good city New Creatia, he is relentlessly hunted by the evil city s inhabitants who are desperate to get Blake s new armor for their own sick twisted king, Essex.

Battle armors collide as Blake seeks to protect himself underground while making his way back to the surface, not only to escape this nightmare but also to save his girlfriend Erika who is in great danger. Unfortunately for Blake, he is attacked above ground just as he is united with his girlfriend Erika. This attack forces him to return to New Creatia to confront this relentless enemy Essex once and for all.

Blake Mantle and the War for New Creatia will keep your interest throughout, from the opening battle sequence underground until the final confrontation between the two main characters!

A.J. Do you crave a closer relationship to God but feel disconnected with the canned explanations of Christianity?

Author Ben MacKinnon has written an exciting new book called Green Bean Spirituality that takes a fresh approach to describing the Christian faith. MacKinnon uses the analogy of buying fresh green beans from the produce department as opposed to buying green beans in a can. Isn’t the quality of fresh green beans so much better than the contents of a tin can?

MacKinnon states that when something is “canned” it is repeated over and over again until it becomes cliché. When we hear the same clichés again about God and Jesus, we stop listening and the message becomes irrelevant to our own lives. In Green Bean Spirituality, MacKinnon uses witty analysis and metaphor to describe the Gospel of Jesus Christ in real and tangible ways.

In Green Bean Spirituality, MacKinnon breaks down his journey toward a closer relationship with God into five main categories: Sin, God, Jesus, Faith and Grace. Drawing both from his own experiences and actual passages from the Bible, MacKinnon shows how we can have a real and authentic approach to Christian faith that breaks through the current confines of “tin can” spirituality.

Readers who are looking to improve their own faith and gain a deeper understanding of God will not be disappointed with Green Bean Spirituality!

About the Author

Ben MacKinnon is a student at the University of Delaware. He is a secondary math-education major and is working on his Bachelor's of Arts degree. MacKinnon says his "career goal is to be a math teacher, but his life's calling is to show the beauty in mathematics to young people."

Writing and Math are his passions, education is his calling, cycling is his muse, and coffee is his addiction. Ben explains: "Most of the things you will find in my writing were drummed up either on the roads anywhere from Delaware to Pennsylvania or ina diner/coffee-shop in Newark, DE (or Portland, OR)." He then adds, "Which is why I would like to thank my bike for not giving up on me and the employees of all Newark coffee establishments for not kicking me out after many hours there."

MacKinnon wrote a book that shares his important message with the world. He was able to publish Green Bean Spirituality with the help of Dog Ear Publishing. Parsons

The story begins in Texas in the late 1870’s. Will Moon is a rugged and honest man who sets out with his young wife to make his own way. On their journey to Colorado Will meets Aaron Nye, an Illinois Yankee who has bought 20,000 acres of land from the well-known cattle baron Lucien B. Maxwell. Aaron convinces Will to stay on and work for him. Together Will and Aaron complete the fence and are beginning to establish a proven beef herd when Aaron is suddenly shot and killed.

Bittersweet, by author P.A. Parsons is a sweeping and epic tale of the west, set against the historical back drop of the Colfax County War, which originated over land disputes in northern New Mexico. As the story unfolds, Will struggles to defend the legitimacy of Aaron’s land entitlement and fulfill the dream his friend set out to achieve. With two women and two children to care for, as well as extensive land and cattle to oversee, Will has more than enough on his shoulders. When tragedy strikes again, Will’s perseverance takes on heroic proportions.

Bittersweet is a brilliant story about love, loss, and the will to survive. Parson’s novel will draw you in from its opening pages and hold you captive until the very end.

About the Author

Horses, a fascination of the west, and a compelling urge to write have been the main factors dominating every move in Peggy's life.
After graduating from high school in Lansing, Michigan, She worked as an animal technician at the Department of Health where they maintained a herd of seventy-five horses used for tetanus and diphtheria toxin. They also had a beautiful, two year old palomino born there that took her eye. Though never used, he was nevertheless unattainable being property of the state.

Two years later, she said goodbye, and with horse and trailer set out for the CM Dude Ranch at Dubois, Wyoming where she had a job as a dishwasher. Halfway through the summer she received word she could buy her golden horse, if she still wanted him. She headed back the minute the season was over. A year later, she and Nugget went on their way to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over the years a lot of horses came and went, but he was with her for thirty-two.

Raton, New Mexico has been home for the past thirty. It is here where she has been able to settle in and write.
Peggy used her passion for the west to write a compelling story; find out more about Peggy and her book here. It took a lifetime for Ray to put his story down on paper, but his recollections are so vivid that it seems the war happened yesterday. His inspiring story gives readers a sense of what life was like then and the sacrifice made by those Americans who fought to defend freedom and our great nation.

Ray was able to tell his incredible story by self-publishing with Dog Ear Publishing. After graduating from Northwestern University she and her husband moved to Seattle. They raised two sons and were both active in soccer and a Boy Scout troop. Alex Got Run Over by a Beer Keg is a fictional book based on her years of experience with pre-pubescent boys and a good memory of stories about her two sons; their friends, including stories her father and husband told about their growing up. During her free time, she was an avid reader; she also served as a docent for the Seattle Aquarium, climbed Mt. Rainier twice, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt Baker, and paddled her sea kayak between the Washington and British Columbia Islands. Since retiring from the Boeing Company, in 2002, she has earned a graduate degree in education form Antioch University, Seattle, and is now serving as a court-appointed special advocate for children in State dependency, and is a substitute teacher in her local district’s middle and high schools.

Ms Brettmann lives on an island in Washington State and has a second home in the Cascades, where she hikes and cross-country skies. Their ignorance about what seemed like a simpler life at home shielded them from seeing or hearing the realities of it. Embarking on a quest to find the girl he married – lost in that life – Miller finds out the hard way just how very wrong they had been.

In his new book What Happened to the Girl I Married?, Michael Miller steps out of his corporate job and into his wife’s uncomfortable shoes at home. With no staff or administrative assistants to support him, Miller’s “ah hah moments” begin on day one and become more profound with each step down the path. Through his journey, Miller offers a new found appreciation for the tireless efforts of stay-at-home Moms and clues as to why women might lose themselves in the job. For the men they married, Miller lets them connect with his evolution through humor, man-isms and motivations for change that are hard to resist.

What Happened to the Girl I Married? is an honest and enlightening love story that’s funny and thought-provoking throughout. The story’s messages help heal old wounds and offer both partners a language to get back on a loving path together – and stay on it.

About the Author

Michael Miller has spent the bulk of his waking hours over the last two decades working his way up in the fast paced high-tech industry. He has held executive sales and marketing positions in several public and private companies. All that experience, however, did not prepare him for what he faced on his journey into his wife’s life at home.

Michael and Linda currently live in Carmel, California where their love story first began eighteen years ago, at their 10-year high school reunion. They live there with their two dynamic boys and are blessed to be surrounded by life-long friends.

The author's web site is WhatHappenedToTheGirlIMarried.com

Michael's book is self published by Dog Ear Publishing - a book publisher providing book publishing and book marketing services to authors.

What Happened to the Girl I Married - the Evolution of a Man
Michael Miller
Dog Ear Publishing
ISBN:1-59858-740-4; 140 pages; $13.95 US

Two new books tell the story of a young man trying to make his way through the Sixties

Author John Morabito releases two new self published books - The Lower Farm and The Upper Lake.

The sixties were a time of great social changes. Young people rose up to protest the Vietnam War and to challenge the establishment in general. Hippies were going barefoot and eating health food while taking all kinds of mind altering drugs. It is against this backdrop that we meet young Johnny Greeneyes, a young drifter who is heading south towards New Mexico from San Francisco to make a new life for himself.

In The Lower Farm by author John J. Morabito, we meet the cast of interesting characters that drift in and out of Greeneyes’ life during his travels. One night Greeneyes sleeps in the “cardboard hotel” next to a homeless man, another night he shares the bed of a beautiful and successful woman, he even spends a night in jail accused of a rape he did not commit. As Greeneyes heads towards his destination “The Lower Farm,” a hippie commune, he finds himself struggling with the label “hippie” and all it entails. Ultimately the tensions between locals and the hippie community will come to a head and Greeneyes lands in jail again accused of murder.

In the second novel from author John J. Morabito, The Upper Lake, the story of Greeneyes continues. The year is 1969 and Greeneyes has returned to San Francisco and works unloading cargo ships. When he loses his job he scours the want ads and finds an employment opportunity up north in Mendocino County. As he hitchhikes his way up north, he meets an interesting young man with a guitar named Buckwheat. The two become friends and Buckwheat astounds Greeneyes with his gift for music. Together the two men hitchhike up to The Upper Lake where they meet a wide array of other drifters. Life is serene and relaxing in this remarkable forest haven but Greeneyes cannot understand what secrets are haunting his friend Buckwheat.

The Upper Lake is a story of adventure, friendship and music. The drug scene has spread out even more and young people everywhere find themselves dependent on mind altering drugs. When Buckwheat confides in his friend Greeneyes, the two friends share a bond that will last a lifetime. Eventually each will find the freedom he seeks.

The Upper Lake and The Lower Farm are compelling stories set in one of the country’s most infamous eras.

The author's web site is www.JohnJMorabito.com.
John self published his books with Dog Ear Publishing - and more information about his book (and self publishing) can be found at www.DogEarPublishing.net

the lower farm
John J.
